WHO - Water Diseases
The World Health Organization (WHO) claims waterborne gastrointestinal infections cause eighty percent of all disease worldwide, and kill more than 50,000 people every day, over 5,000 from diarrhea and cholera. As a traveler, if you believe you are the exception, you are not.
The WHO attributes 80% of all travel
diseases to contaminated drinking water. Don’t let contaminated
drinking water spoil your vacation (or worse). Avoid unfiltered tap water and ice cubes anytime
the water quality is uncertain – even bottled water can be
questionable, when available. According to WHO, almost half of all
travelers suffer from some form of traveler's diarrhea (TD) while en-route. Of those afflicted, 90% of the cases are preventable if basic precautions are taken.
Having been raised, traveled and worked in the tropics, I learned Prevention, namely proper attention to sanitation, is the first line of defense.
What preventive measures are effective for Traveler's Diarrhea?
Travelers can minimize their risk for Traveler's Diarrhea by practicing the following effective preventive measures:
- Avoid
eating foods or drinking beverages purchased from street vendors or
other establishments where unhygienic conditions are present
- Avoid eating raw or undercooked meat and seafood
- Avoid eating raw fruits (e.g., oranges, bananas, avocados) and vegetables unless the traveler peels them.
If
handled properly well-cooked and packaged foods usually are safe, but tap
water, ice, unpasteurized milk, and dairy products are associated with
increased risk for Traveler's Diarrhea.
